Hyderabad Police and the Transport Department have rolled out a set of stricter traffic enforcement measures aimed at easing congestion on the roads and improving safety. Some of the key changes include a special drive against common violations like driving on the wrong side, use of non-standard or irregular number plates, multi-toned horns, and illegal sirens. Authorities are also cracking down on underage driving: minors caught behind the wheel without valid driving licences are being penalised, and in some cases, vehicle registrations may be cancelled.
Another important change is in traffic signal management. Around 80% of traffic signals in Hyderabad have been automated, which has helped raise average vehicular speeds from about 17-18 km/h to 24-25 km/h. The “Operation Green Light” initiative, in collaboration with Google, is using real-time traffic data to optimise signal timings to reduce delays and improve traffic flow. Supplementary steps include increasing high-visibility enforcement (CCTV, drones), more Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs), reflective tapes & rear marking plates being made mandatory, and setting up traffic awareness programs (in schools etc.).
